Etsy’s new AI policies have raised a practical question for shop owners: could an edited image or an AI-assisted product put the business at risk?
The useful response is a listing-by-listing review, not a promise that one checklist can prevent every suspension. This guide explains the October 22, 2026 update and a practical process for checking your shop. It is an independent SW SOFTTECH guide, not Etsy approval or a guarantee of reinstatement.
What changed in Etsy’s October 2026 AI update?
Etsy’s October 22 announcement introduces tighter expectations for listing authenticity and says existing listings must comply too. It distinguishes required rules from recommendations: making the first photo especially realistic and explaining AI photo edits are best practices, while misleading representations remain prohibited.
The announcement also says AI-image guidance is being added to the listing form. A detection notice is not automatically a suspension. The new buyer-reporting reason initially helps Etsy understand possible misuse; Etsy says those reports do not trigger immediate enforcement by themselves.
Our recommendation: check the underlying product and listing rather than trying to make an image evade detection.
Can Etsy suspend a shop for AI use?
AI use alone is not a universal ban. Etsy’s stance on AI creations permits seller-prompted creations with individual human creative involvement and requires disclosure in the listing description when the item is AI-created.
However, entirely bot-generated content, AI-generated functional instructions and AI prompt bundles are prohibited. Functional instructions include patterns, recipes, project plans and guides that tell buyers how to achieve a result. Adding an “AI-assisted” disclaimer does not make prohibited instructions eligible.
Etsy says listings can be removed and severe or repeated violations can lead to permanent shop closure. Other rules, including intellectual-property rights, still apply.
For a shop team, the operational question is therefore: who created this specific item, what did AI do, and can the listing accurately explain that process?
Check the photos and the product type together
Under Etsy’s Listing Image Requirements, most products need at least one untouched photograph of the actual item in a real setting. Keep that required image unedited. Other images may be edited if they remain accurate; hiding defects or changing the product’s appearance is prohibited.
The policy includes important product-specific distinctions:
- Print-on-demand: an authorized stock mockup may show your original design on a standard base product.
- Digital downloads: show a preview or excerpt of visual content. Nonvisual downloads, such as audio, may use representative imagery that does not mislead.
- Customized or made-to-order work: use photographs of real finished examples you have made.
- Patterns, recipes, seeds and similar products: include a real, unedited photograph of a result produced using the product.
Misleading images can lead to refunds, listing removal and further enforcement for repeated violations.
Check the applicable exception before deciding that every listing needs the same photographic treatment. An exception is not permission to invent a result.
A practical Etsy listing audit: what to review first
The following workflow is our recommendation, rather than an additional Etsy policy.
Start with a simple review sheet. Use one row per listing and these columns:
| Review field | What your team should record |
|---|---|
| Listing and variant | Exact item and options being reviewed |
| Product type | Physical item, digital file, POD, custom work or instructions |
| Source material | Where the original photographs and design files are stored |
| AI involvement | What was generated, edited or drafted |
| Product comparison | Differences between the listing and the actual deliverable |
| Required action | Replace image, correct wording, verify rights or review eligibility |
| Reviewer and date | Who checked the finished listing and when |
Prioritize listings where customers have already asked whether a photograph is real, where several variants share one ambiguous image, or where the deliverable is difficult to understand from the first screen.
Then work through the rest of the catalogue. A small shop can assign one person to preparation and a second to final review. A solo seller can separate those tasks into two passes.
Compare the listing with what the buyer receives
Our suggested review is deliberately concrete. Open the product, its packaging or downloadable file alongside the listing. Ask:
- Does the selected variant match the image and description?
- Are dimensions and included components clear?
- Could a prop, frame or accessory be mistaken for something included?
- Is the distinction between a digital download and a physical shipment obvious?
- Does personalization have clearly stated limits?
- Has a polished presentation made a modest product look materially different?
For example, consider a hypothetical seller offering a handmade ceramic cup. During review, the seller notices that a styled secondary image appears to include a matching saucer, while the listing sells only the cup. The team should resolve that ambiguity before treating the listing as ready.
This is a buyer-expectation check, not an example of a guaranteed Etsy enforcement outcome.
Keep a record of the review
We recommend retaining the original photograph, the published version, the source design and a short description of the changes. Keep permissions for third-party assets with the relevant listing records.
For instructional products, separately document authorship and your own test process. A test log can help explain how you checked a product; it is not a workaround for Etsy’s restriction on AI-generated instructions.
Use clear file names and a shared folder structure so another team member can retrieve the evidence. Avoid collecting unnecessary customer information in the review sheet.
If several people or outside contractors prepare listings, make final human review an explicit responsibility. Define who checks photographs, who confirms the product description and who approves publication. Do not let “the software uploaded it” become the only explanation of how a listing went live.
What if Etsy has already removed a listing?
Read the specific notice before making changes. Distinguish a listing removal from an account restriction and record the item, stated reason and available response route.
Etsy’s announcement directs sellers to the Policy violations page in Shop Manager for listing appeals. Use the instructions available for your particular notice; an appeal is not a guaranteed reversal.
Our recommendation is to prepare a concise factual response: identify the listing, explain the relevant creation process, describe the correction and attach the evidence requested. Do not claim you made changes that you have not completed or create another listing merely to evade the action.
Build trust before trying to grow sales
A reliable listing review should sit alongside your wider marketplace work: clear product information, consistent fulfilment and measurement that reflects real orders.
Our Google Shopping product-feed audit offers a separate framework for checking catalogue consistency on Google. For businesses also selling on Amazon, the Sponsored Products audit guide covers product readiness before increasing campaign spend. Each marketplace has its own rules; those guides do not replace Etsy’s requirements.
SW SOFTTECH’s eCommerce and marketplace services can help organize catalogue reviews and a practical improvement plan. Book a free consultation to discuss your workflow. We cannot promise that Etsy will approve a listing or restore a shop.
