Increasing an Amazon Sponsored Products budget can buy more clicks. It cannot repair an uncompetitive product page, irrelevant search terms, weak margins or a campaign optimized around the wrong target.
For US marketplace sellers, an effective Amazon PPC audit should answer three questions before spend increases:
- Is the advertised product ready to convert?
- Are ads reaching relevant shopping queries and product pages?
- Can the resulting sales support the advertising cost?
The sequence matters. Start with the product and its economics, then review search terms, targeting, bids and budgets.
Define a profitable target before judging ACoS
Amazon defines advertising cost of sales (ACoS) as ad spend divided by ad-attributed sales. A campaign spending $1,000 and producing $4,000 in attributed sales has a 25% ACoS and a 4× ROAS.
Neither figure proves profitability.
Consider a hypothetical product selling for $40 with $26 in product, Amazon, fulfillment, shipping and other variable costs before advertising. It has $14 of contribution available before ads, or 35% of revenue. In this simplified example, a 35% ACoS is the variable-cost break-even point before overhead, taxes, returns and other excluded expenses. At 25% ACoS, approximately 10% of attributed revenue remains before those excluded costs.
This is an illustration, not a benchmark. Your acceptable ACoS depends on product margin, customer value, launch goals, organic sales effects and cash-flow constraints. Amazon’s ACoS guide explains the platform metric; your financial records should determine what is commercially acceptable.
Our recommendation is to write a target for each product group before changing bids. A mature bestseller, a new launch and a clearance item may require different decisions.
Audit the product detail page before the campaign
Sponsored Products sends shoppers directly to a product detail page. If that page cannot make a clear case for the product, better targeting may simply deliver more qualified visitors to a weak offer.
Review:
- whether the product is in stock and eligible to advertise;
- featured-offer status where applicable;
- title accuracy and readability;
- main and secondary images;
- bullet points and product description;
- price, coupon or promotion;
- ratings and review context;
- variation structure and the exact ASIN being advertised;
- delivery promise and return information visible to the shopper.
Amazon’s product detail page guidance recommends detailed titles, multiple high-quality images, competitive offers and sufficient inventory. Those are platform recommendations, not guarantees of clicks or sales.
Do not compensate for a listing problem with a higher bid. If clicks are relevant but conversion is weak across several targeting groups, investigate the product page, price, reviews, delivery and offer before assuming the keywords are wrong.
For stores also running Google Shopping, our product feed audit guide covers the same commercial principle: product data, inventory and the buying experience should be checked before acquisition spend is expanded.
Use the search term report to find what shoppers actually used
A keyword is the advertiser’s target; a search term is the shopper query or matched context that produced the interaction.
Amazon’s Sponsored Products search term documentation says the report can identify high-performing customer searches and terms that may deserve negative targeting. The documentation, updated May 18, 2026, also notes that the report includes terms with at least one ad click. Its impressions therefore may not match Campaign Manager totals.
Classify search terms into four groups:
| Search-term outcome | Practical next step |
|---|---|
| Relevant and producing sales within target | Consider moving it into controlled manual targeting |
| Relevant with clicks but insufficient data | Keep collecting evidence at a measured bid |
| Relevant but consistently outside the target | Lower the bid, improve the offer or isolate it for testing |
| Clearly irrelevant to the product | Consider a negative phrase, exact or product target |
Do not add negatives only because a term has one click and no sale. Low-volume products need time to produce meaningful evidence. Amazon’s targeting guide recommends evaluating performance before excluding terms and explains automatic, manual and negative targeting.
Separate discovery from control
Automatic targeting can discover queries and product contexts based on product information and prior shopping behavior. Manual targeting allows keyword or product-level control. They can work together when their roles are clear.
A practical structure is:
- automatic campaigns for discovery;
- manual broad and phrase campaigns for controlled expansion;
- manual exact campaigns for proven queries;
- product targeting for relevant ASINs or categories;
- negative targeting to reduce overlap or block unsuitable traffic.
This is a recommendation, not an Amazon requirement. Avoid unnecessary duplication; clear names, product groups and campaign roles make results easier to interpret.
Amazon currently supports broad, phrase and exact keyword match types. Exact is more restrictive; broad allows more variation. A broader match type is not automatically wasteful, and exact match is not automatically profitable. Relevance, competition, product readiness, bids and conversion all affect the result.
Review bids, placements and budget separately
A campaign can be limited by three different controls:
- Bid: the amount available for an auction.
- Placement adjustment: an increase for locations such as top of search.
- Daily budget: the campaign’s spending limit.
Do not treat them as interchangeable.
Amazon’s Sponsored Products bidding guidance, updated September 14, 2026, lists dynamic, fixed and rule-based strategies. Dynamic “down only” can reduce bids when a click appears less likely to convert. Dynamic “up and down” can increase or reduce bids based on conversion likelihood and may raise a bid by up to 100% for placements.
Before enabling aggressive increases, review the effective bid exposure and confirm the campaign already performs within the business target.
A budget-limited campaign with profitable, consistent demand may justify more budget. An inefficient campaign does not become efficient because it can spend longer.
Check performance at the product level
Campaign averages can hide poor ASINs. Use the advertised product report to review sales and performance for each promoted product, then compare those results with inventory, margin and product-page changes. Amazon’s campaign measurement guide also identifies search term, targeting and advertised product reports as practical optimization inputs.
Track weekly trends using consistent date ranges:
- spend, sales, ACoS and ROAS;
- clicks, orders and conversion rate;
- branded versus non-branded search terms where identifiable;
- top-performing and inefficient ASINs;
- placement performance;
- budget-limited profitable campaigns;
- stock, price, coupon and listing changes.
The free ROAS tracker guide provides a simple framework for recording sales returns, lead or acquisition costs and weekly decisions. Amazon-reported sales remain attribution data; reconcile them with marketplace settlements and product-level financials.
A seven-step Amazon PPC audit
- Calculate the product’s contribution margin and acceptable ACoS.
- Confirm inventory, featured-offer eligibility and detail-page readiness.
- Export search term, targeting, advertised product and placement data.
- Separate discovery targets from proven targets.
- Add negatives only when relevance or sufficient performance evidence supports the decision.
- Review effective bids, placement adjustments and bidding strategy together.
- Increase budget only where demand, conversion and economics support expansion.
Returns, attribution timing, promotions, seasonality, inventory and small samples can distort short periods. Document changes and avoid changing bids, targeting, listing content and price simultaneously.
